Thunderbolts #1 Review

THUNDERBOLTS #1
by Daniel Way and Steve Dillon

Thunderbolts #1 has a sound concept. Throw 5 of the Marvel Universe's most popular anti-heroes onto one team, and have them kill bad guys. Sounds fun, right? Wrong.

Daniel Way makes this a formulaic and cliched opening issue. Spoiler alert: The only freaking thing that happens is that General Ross tries to bring all 5 of the characters onto the team. I thought Way could have at least introduced the main villain of the first arc, but he doesn't. It's all boring set up and exposition. Way does have a steady grip on the characters' voices, but there isn't much substance here past that.

Steve Dillon is the kind of artist that you either love or hate. Unfortunately, I fall into the latter category. I think that Dillon's art is stiff and lifeless. It seems like he can only draw 3 facial expressions (A: Angry, B: Shocked, surprised, C: Sad/emotionless), all of which are incredibly ugly. Dillon's faces all have oversized lips, and there doesn't seem to be any motion in the panels. However, Guru FX's colors pop off the page, and look spectacular.

Thunderbolts #1 is everything that you DON'T want from a debut issue. I'd pass on it.

STORY: 2/5
ART: 2/5
VERDICT: 2/5
