New Avengers #1 Review

NEW AVENGERS #1
by Johnathan Hickman and Steve Epting

Expectations are pretty high for Johnathan Hickman's next Avengers book. Does it live up to the quality of the main Avengers book? Find out!

Johnathan Hickman focuses the first issue of New Avengers on Black Panther, who quit the  Illuminati a little while prior. Hickman does a fine job of introducing Black Panther. It's just that... He doesn't introduce any of the other members. I also do not like the new villain, who doesn't even have a clear goal yet. I also found a large part of the issue to be boring and pointless exposition. Spoiler alert. I'm going to save you $3.99 with my basic plot summary of the book: Black Panther meets a new villain, he gets away, and the Illumanti (and Captain America) show up for some reason.

Steve Epting's art is OK. It reminds me of Brian Hitch and Greg Land. It lacks any special or unique quality, but it wasn't too bad.

New Avengers #1 is an underwhelming new series debut, that I'm not too enthusiastic about. If the series remains this quality, it'll be as lame as Bendis's New Avengers.

STORY: 2/5
ART: 3/5
VERDICT: 2.5/5
