BATMAN INCORPORATED #13
by Grant Morrison and Chris Burnham
I really think DC should have taken a cue from Morrison's Action Comics, and given the series one more issue to wrap up.
Batman Incorporated #13's biggest problems is loose ends. While Morrison's runs wraps up, there are still way too many plot threads left open, for example, where is Doctor Hurt? Wasn't he shown to be alive in Batman Inc #5? Or, is Batman #666 still the future of Gotham? Hell, Morrison even sets up about 4 more open story elements in the epilogue, leaving us completely unsatisfied! But beyond that, this was still a surprisingly good issue. Maybe if it were longer, it would be much better. You still have more of Morrison's trademark symbolic dialogue, the awesome action, and his signature draw dropping moments. I also thought it was cool for Morrison to acknowledge Zero Year towards the end.
Chris Burnham's art makes the issue. No one but Burnham could have captured the perfect insanity and chaos of this issue. There's just a kinetic and movie-like quality to the way he frames each scene. The action panels are frantic, bloody and brutal, and they're a real pleasure to look at. And the one element of the art that doesn't get praised enough: Nathan Fairbarn's colors. Damn, they are GORGEOUS.
Batman Incorporated #13 is a poor wrap up to Morrison's Batman run, but it would have been an incredible issue if it weren't Morrison's last.
